DESCRIBE THE WAY YOU DRESS

So I went to class like any other morning. I forgot what was the topic mainly
about but all I remembered clearly was students were asked by the lecturer to
describe themselves. I myself, unfortunately, was asked to describe the way I dress.

I have nothing against the class but I sure hell hesitate when she asked me that.
It’s really funny how one shall permanently have a “style” to describe how they
live their lives. And funnier when they mock those who do not.

I tried to explain that I don’t have any specific words to describe myself because
I change a lot. I change everyday. I can’t be the same person my whole life.
I can’t have only one interest in life.

When my answer wasn’t good enough, I got this as a reply:

“How can you not know how to describe yourselves? It’s your personality.
It’s what you need to know because your personality shapes the perception
of the society.”

or something like that.

Personally, I disagree. I disagree a lot.
Personality is not meant to be permanent.
People change. People change everyday.
I am not being mean but I just want to explain my case.

I wear different types of clothes every day.
I wear formal clothes when I have presentations
because they make me look smart and tidy.

I wear tees and jeans on every other day because
I’m comfortable wearing them.

I wear baju kurungs to cultural ceremonies like
Malay weddings, tahlil, aqiqah and Eid.
I wear dresses and trendy outfits when I go out with friends.
So, my question is, how would you describe my everyday dressing?

The way I dress has no absolute word to match.
I want to look smart, neat, sexy, pretty, adorable,
glamorous, funny and possibly Gothic at different times.
I cannot have all of those in one time dress-up.

If it is meant to be that what you need is the word “attractive”,
I believe attractive does not apply to every possible dress-up I could do.

Heels, face foundation, accessories..

Can you relate?

The way I dress might be comfortable for me but not through your eyes.
And it might be nice for you to see but not comfortable for me to wear.
So how can I describe about the way I dress in a word or two,
further more the word might not be entirely correct from your perspective?

I have always wondered who was the first person to divide what formal,
semi formal and sportswear looks like?

Why can’t jeans be in the formal group? Some jeans are just fine-looking,
and they don’t look either poor or sexy.

Why is leather shoes are formal and fancy shoes aren’t?

Why do I have to tie my hair into ponytail to look formal instead of just
letting it falls perfectly balanced behind my ear?

There aren’t laws about these. But why tf are we asked to dress as such?

These norms are killing me. These cultural perspectives are not making sense
any longer. There are variety of colors but what’s wrong with
girls preferring blue and boys preferring pink?
What’s wrong with girls playing football and robots and cars while
boys playing Barbie dolls and kitchen?

Norms are not laws. I am just saying that people hold on to norms so much
like laws that when we don’t follow the norms, we are being perceived just
as wrong as the criminals.
